The Negative Power Of Self-Affirmation

Returning from a recreational outing, business event, church gathering or even a volunteer effort to accomplish some common good, the person beside you says…

“That ______. Good night, he (or she) has got to be on of the most self-centered, arrogant persons I’ve ever met. Yeah, he has done a lot but he also has a long way to go in his life. I wouldn’t want to be like him: ever.”

Consider the brief quote below to be one of the many, many “versions” of business or personal success out there in the information world:

But one version definitely worth thinking about in terms of our personal growth and development.

Here ya go:

Success Is…

Being self-centered enough

to “make it happen”

and wise enough to avoid

being overcome with myself

in the process!

Being “properly proud” in my estimation is not only appropriate, but needed. We need to affirm and utilize our strengths for the purpose of making the impact in the world we desire and contributing to the same world in which we live.

However…

Self destructive pride can be a “killer” — and not in the good way. In my personal opinion it can…

• Destroy relationships.
• Create unhealthy environments for people to work in.
• Represent a non-healthy view of one’s self if not based on a measure of truth. In other words, it can carry with it a measure of self-deception.
• Etc.

And you be the “etc.” above by completing your own mental list of the negative results of pride unchecked and/or pride undeserved demonstrated in the lives of individuals.

The point: it can be harmful and we simply need to avoid the negative consequences of indulging in the wrong type of pride.

And On The More Positive Side…

Someone would be hard pressed by the reading of my posts to come to any false conclusions regarding our need to affirm ourselves or others. In fact, I would refer you to these two posts as an example of how I feel:

With those positive thoughts in the background, you could ask:

• How have I laid aside the deceptive nature of false pride in my life?
• If I had to share three points with someone on how to become successful at life or business and yet keep pride in check, what would I tell them?
• What dangers have I seen to avoid in this area of thinking?

Quotes On Living The Good Life

Personally speaking, I gravitate in the direction of well crafted thoughts which I would characterize as…

• Brief,
• Said well,
• And meaningful.

In addition, I run toward the challenge of creating such writings with great delight!  And if you really want to know what brings even more delight to my heart, then all you would need to do would be to sense my inner response when I feel that this combination takes place in another person:

• They read what I write,
• Pause just long enough for some measure of a positive “Ah, ha” or “Yes!” moment to take place,
• And complete their response with a more definite, “Yes. That’s true.  I like that!”

Now that sequence could be called the proverbial icing on the cake for this guy!

My Hope

It would be “totally cool” should you, the reader, find yourself engaged in any level of appreciation as a result of taking in my brief original quotes on “living the good life” found below.

Take the inspiration from wherever you find yourself at the moment to wherever the inspiration leads you.

Create your own moments for blessing the moments of others.

Take this post, for instance.  The quote you read at the top of the page came into being simply because in my relaxation I reflected about the what inspiration means, thought about being a positive influence to others through one of means I have to do so (this blog), and began to write.

I Will Take Control Of My Mind

I tend to read books slow at times…

• Reflecting
• Learning
• Taking Notes
• Applying

And, lately, I’ve been returning to Napoleon Hill’s Keys To Positive Thinking: 10 Steps To Health, Wealth and Success by Napoleion Hill and MichaelJ. Ritt. Jr.

And I’d like to share with my readers this “creed” from the book that I have totally enjoyed. Naturally, we need to adjust things to our own frame of mind, belief systems, etc., but I am sure you may quickly find your own applications.  Of course, I may help in that process with a few questions

Here’s what I would term the affirmation from the book:

• I believe my mind is my own.
• I believe I can take possession of my own mind.
• I believe I can direct and control my emotions, moods, feelings, intellect, tendencies, attitudes, passions, and habits with the intention of developing a positive mental attitude.
• I will develop a positive mental attitude.

Obviously, taking charge of our own minds for our own reasons — whether for attraction marketing, home business, family development, personal growth, or any other area of our personal or professional lives — is crucial.

Making It Yours

As I mention above, you may not be in agreement with all of the thoughts, word choices, etc. but I would imagine you could design your own. You might ask yourself:

• What wording would I change?
• How could I say it in my way, from my heart, to use for my purposes?

And, then, personally may want to decide how you could bring whatever you create to the forefront of your life in a way that would be meaningful to you?

• Make a quote and post somewhere.
• How about a “sticky note” with that computer program you have?
• Possibly in your journal?
• Etc.

Yep, Go Ahead and Share!

2. In my review of the quotations I just read, what do I
hear my heart saying? Am I blocking anything that *should*
be heard?

3. Reviewing my world at this time, who comes to mind when I
think of someone I should influence by using the power of
encouragement.

4. Should any of the quotes be placed in my day planner for
further reflection?

5. Am I becoming all I can be at this time in my life or
allowing who I could become to be smothered in a sea of all
the things I think I need to do instead of those I really
should be doing?

6. Do I need to reflect on what “purpose” means for me at
this stage in my life?

7. Could I — or should I — be more purpose directed than I
have been in recent days? If I thought about why that might
be so, does that tell me anything I need to know at the
moment?

8. What type of legacy do I desire to leave? Why?
